1. RoHS Testing
Background
With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, governments have introduced regulations to limit the use of harmful substances in electronic products. Among them, the RoHS certification regulations formulated by the European Union have attracted much attention. The implementation of RoHS regulations has had a profound impact on the global electronic product manufacturing industry, promoting the transformation of the electronic product manufacturing industry to the direction of environmental protection and sustainable development, and promoting the market demand for green and environmentally friendly products.

Regulated Substances
EU-RoHS
UK-RoHS: lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBBs, PBDEs, DBP, BBP, DEHP, DIBP
CN-RoHS: lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium

Testing Standards
IEC62321 series standard
GB/T 39560 series standard

2. WEEE Testing & Evaluation
WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) is the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive. On 24 July 2012, the European Union issued a new Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2012/19/EU. The new directive requires that from 15 August 2018, almost all electrical and electronic products (EEE) should be regulated in accordance with the six categories specified in Appendix III of the Directive.

3. Halogen testing
Background
Halogen control requirements began in the PCB industry and are now slowly expanding to more products and areas, generally from industry associations and brand companies. Although there is no direct national law that mandates controls, they are often required in purchaser-oriented supply chains. Different industry norms and internal standards may put forward different requirements for halogens, generally according to the specific enterprise standard requirements to determine the specific materials or components that need to control halogens.

Regulatory Requirements
Bromine (Br) shall not exceed 900ppm, Chlorine (Cl) shall not exceed 900ppm, and the total content of halogen shall not exceed 1,500 PPM.

Testing Standard
EN 14582:2016

4. Swedish Tax on Chemicals in Certain Electronics
Background
On November 24, 2016, the Swedish Ministry of Finance issued a new decree (2016:1067) on the requirement for the levy of chemical substances taxes on certain electronic products (abbreviated LTCE). The ordinance introduced taxes on controlled products entering the Swedish market on July 1, 2017. This law requires an investigation of the presence of certain hazardous substances in products, and depending on the level of hazardous substances, companies can claim a 50% or 90% tax reduction discount.

Regulatory Requirement
Bromine, chlorine and phosphorus compounds do not exceed 0.1%

Testing Standard
EN 14582:2016

5. Battery Products
Background
Batteries may contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and acid and alkali electrolyte solutions, if not properly handled, will cause varying degrees of harm to human body and ecological environment. The European Union has published a new regulation (EU) 2023/1542 on batteries and waste batteries, which will come into force on 18 February 2024. The new regulations implement more comprehensive supervision of the entire battery industry chain, regulating the full life cycle of batteries from production to reuse and recycling, and ensuring their safety, sustainability and competitiveness.
The China Market Supervision Administration and the Standardization Administration of China issued the national mandatory standard GB 24427-2021 "Limitation requirements for mercury, cadmium and lead content in Zinc negative galvanic Cells", which was officially implemented on November 1, 2021.

Regulated Substance
Mercury, Lead, Cadmium

Regulatory Requirements
Placing on the market of EU member States requires meeting the requirements of the EU Battery Directive.
Batteries placed in China need to meet the requirements of the GB 24427-2021 standard.

6. Packaging Products for Restricted Substances Testing
The EU Packaging Directive 94/62/EC requires that all packaging and packaging waste placed on the EU market, whether it is used in industry, commerce, offices, shops, services, homes or other places, and regardless of the material used in the packaging, need to meet the control requirements of the EU Packaging Directive.

The US GONEG established The Toxics in Packaging Clearing House (TPCH) in 1992 to promote the US Model Packaging Toxicity Law to states and to support and coordinate the implementation of regulations. Currently, TPCH packaging toxicity regulations have been gradually adopted in 19 states across the United States, which restrict the entire packaging supply chain and the use of packaging products manufacturers or distributors. In February 2021, TPCH published new packaging toxicity regulations that increase the control requirements for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and phthalates.
